How to reach Santorini by cruise ship during summer

Each summer, Santorini opens its arms to a wave of cruise travelers, eager to experience its soaring volcanic cliffs, gleaming white villages, and sunsets that linger in memory long after the journey ends. This island is a Mediterranean jewel, dazzling visitors with its breathtaking beauty.
Arriving in Santorini by ship is a sight to remember. As your ship moves into the volcanic bay, tall cliffs with the well-known villages of Fira and Oia appear in front of you. This amazing view quickly shows why Santorini is one of the most photographed places in Greece.
If you’re cruising to Santorini in the lively summer months, knowing how to navigate your arrival ensures you spend less time waiting and more time soaking up the island’s magic.

How cruise ships arrive in Santorini

Santorini is different from other cruise stops because it lacks a large port. Instead, ships stop in the caldera below Fira, making your arrival special.
From there, small boats take passengers either to Athinios Port for those who have booked a shuttle bus with the cruise line, or to the Old Port of Fira at the bottom of the cliffs for people who want to explore Santorini on their own.
The short 5 to 10-minute boat ride is more than just a way to get there. It gives you a great view of the caldera’s steep walls rising above the bright sea.
With cruise ships arriving all day long, the Old Port buzzes with activity in summer. A little advance planning lets you skip the crowds and dive straight into your Santorini adventure.

Getting from the cruise port to Fira

After you arrive at the Old Port, your next step is to get to Fira, which sits almost 300 meters above the sea. There are three main ways to go up.
The Santorini Cable Car takes you to the top in just a few minutes, moving smoothly as wide views of the caldera appear below you.
In peak season, lines for the cable car can stretch long, especially when several ships arrive together.

Walking the Steps

If you want some adventure, you can take the Karavolades Steps, a long staircase with almost 580 steps that goes from the Old Port to Fira. The views are great, but the climb can be hard when it is hot. Many travelers choose to walk or take the cable car instead. In our opinion, we suggest that active guests do not ride donkeys, as we are members of the association for the welfare of animals in Santorini.

Water Taxi to Oia

During busy times, when many cruise ships are in port, there can be a long line for the cable car. Taking a small boat to Oia might seem like an option, but it isn’t very fast because it takes a long time to get there. We are not allowed to pick you up from the bay of Oia. Instead, small minivans take you to the Oia parking area, where our tour guide can pick you up.

Private water taxi to Athinios port

Going to Athinios Port from the cruise ship is the best way to make for an easy, less crowded trip. First, you need to take a small boat to the Old Port of Fira. From there, you take another boat straight to Athinios, where your tour guide will meet you.
However, some cruises starting in 2025 offer a direct small boat to the port of Athinios. This way is easier, simpler, and costs less.

Best Things to Do in Santorini During a Cruise

With cruise stops lasting just 4 to 8 hours, picking the perfect activities is key to making every moment on Santorini count.
Some of the most popular places to explore include:

  • Oia – Known for its blue domes and breathtaking views
  • Imerovigli – One of the most scenic viewpoints on the island
  • Pyrgos – A quieter village with panoramic views
  • Red Beach – A dramatic red volcanic landscape
  • Perissa Beach – A relaxing seaside destination

Since time is short, many travelers choose to explore with a local guide who can show Santorini’s hidden corners, the best views, and secret places.

A Relaxed Way to Explore Santorini from Your Cruise

Santorini’s summer crowds are usually in Fira and Oia, but if you want to see more of the island, a small-group or private tour lets you explore at your own speed without worrying about getting around.
Local tour companies like Santorini Golden Ibex specialize in creating special trips for cruise passengers. They offer comfortable cars, helpful guides, and flexible plans that fit cruise schedules. This lets visitors see places like Oia, traditional villages, great viewpoints, and local wineries, while making sure they get back to the ship on time.
Cruise visitors often enjoy finding Santorini’s quieter spots, learning about its volcanic history, and having real experiences away from the usual tourist areas.

Why Arriving in Santorini by Cruise Is So Special

There are few arrivals as breathtaking as Santorini’s. Sailing into the caldera, you’re greeted by cliffs that soar skyward, whitewashed villages spilling down the slopes, and the endless blue of the Aegean Sea.
Whether you wander through postcard-perfect villages, sip local wines, or simply lose yourself in the views, even a brief stay in Santorini leaves memories that would last longer after you sail away.
For cruise travelers, a little planning and the right choices can transform a hurried stop into an unforgettable Santorini adventure.
